What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. It is believed that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Fibromyalgia may be associated with chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmunity, or other diseases.
Naturopathic medicine can help by evaluating and addressing the underlying cause(s) of the condition. Fibromyalgia can be a complex condition with many different underlying causes such as chronic infection, lowered immune system, chronic stress, chronic fatigue, toxicity, hormone imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and more. The goal of Naturopathic treatment is to help the patient find the roots of the disease while helping reduce the symptoms using natural medicines like herbs, vitamins and supplements, homeopathy, lifestyle, and prescription medications if necessary.
A thorough history, a physical exam respective of the condition, and the appropriate accompanying lab tests will help direct treatment to address the symptom(s) the patient is experiencing and help ameliorate the discomfort/pain so the patient may attend to their daily life activities. More importantly, the fibromyalgia treatment regime will help replenish the deficiency, restore balance, and/or help the body detox the offending toxin(s), thus the root cause of the condition is addressed appropriately. We want to help educate and empower the patient to take their health into their own hands so they can decrease the dependence on prescription and over the counter drugs, thus live a healthy life, naturally.
Chiropractic care is a very common or complementary treatment for fibromyalgia. A chiropractor treats pain related to pressure points, back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and pain from musculoskeletal injuries. Chiropractic treatment is effective for fibromyalgia because it may reduce pain levels and increase cervical and lumbar ranges of motion by reducing pain signals sent from impinged nerves and restricted spinal segments
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine provide relief of symptoms by balancing the body, and adjusting the circulation of energy and blood. Local stimulation with modalities such as therapeutic massage, heat, cupping, moxibustion and gua sha in specific regions also help to reduce the pain. A regular plan, with long-term, consistent integrative treatment is necessary for patients with fibromyalgia.
At Optimal Health & Wellness our treatment approach for treating fibromyalgia is individualized based on the patients need and we provide an integrated approach to utilize modalities that will best help the patient heal.
